What is a theology of vocation? How do youth leaders talk about work? Is there a theological discussion to have about “being educated” and about “getting a job”? How do youth group leaders nurture the student who wants to be in a secular profession along with the one who wants to be a pastor or missionary? Schools have an embedded goal of helping students get jobs, but do we in youth ministry know how to teach youth about vocation? If a student doesn’t want to go into ministry, would he or she feel equally valued by a youth leader who intentionally or unintentionally elevates mission trips and ministry as the highest form of work?
